Workforce issues continue to plague business from small shops to large corporations.  We’re all aware of the many issues of concern: Covid 19, passing a drug test, prospective employee demands, unwillingness to work, etc.  Attacking the problem is taking different forms in different areas of Ohio.  Career fairs, hiring events and sign-on bonuses are all in play.  Locally, each of our school districts have employed career navigators to establish a workforce pipeline from school to work.  Under leadership from the East Central Ohio Educational Service Center, the navigators are charged with establishing relationships with companies large and small.  The frequent contacts are designed to determine the specific needs of employers, then convey the information to staff and students in each of the navigator’s respective districts.  Such information as the availability of tuition assistance, sign-on bonuses, benefit packages, etc., are invaluable to school counselors as they work with students entering the workforce.  The navigators are also involved in the traditional recruitment strategies such as career fairs, job shadowing and plant tours, and other activities.  There are many individual stories from students who have been assisted in their career choice by these school personnel, but assessing the over success of the navigator program is more difficult.  One definite result of this effort, though, is the forging of relationships between company Human Relations professionals and the local schools from whom they may employ a solid percentage of their workforce.
